The week started off a little cold due to the northly wind, however towards the end of the period the temperatures had increased massively. This saw the fishing improve with some great catches on buzzers and some excellent evening rises to dries through the middle. A total of 388 anglers visited the site catching a total of 1424 trout for a weekly rod average of 3.67. The best tactics overall have been to fish with Di 3 sinking lines with a combination blobs and boobies. Buzzers, either fished under the or straight lined, have produced great catches. Finally, we have also seen some great rises and reports of fish coming to dry flies.
On Monday a bright blue-sky day teamed with a northly wind made the fishing tricky. Nevertheless, boat angler Rod Wilson did well fishing on the rudder with a Di 7 sinking line with a gold and silver tube to land 12 fish. Rod’s best spot was fishing over N buoy near Musborough Shoal. Jim Marriott fished all along the North Shore in a boat to land 5 fish. His best tactic was to use a hot head buzzer 12ft under a bung, before landing some fish on dries later in the day. On the bank for the last four hours Peter Bierenacki and Jarod Burton enjoyed good sport on dries to land 3 and 4 rainbows respectively.
A sunny day with the winds remaining in the north made once again for challenging conditions for the anglers out on the water on Tuesday. David Cole fished the boats to land 8 while his boat partner boated one and a perch. On the bank Season Ticket holder Paul Walker landed 5 all on buzzers from the Cornfield. Russell Swinbourne used buzzers to land 14 rainbows from along the main Draycote Dam wall then found fish in Toft during the afternoon. The McIntosh party, down for a short break for Scotland, enjoyed the best of the sport landing 44 between the 7 of them. All their fish came from Toft on buzzers and damsels.
Wednesday saw another cool day due to the Northly wind with some severe gusting. Mr Smart landed 4 fish on buzzers fishing in car parks 3 and 4 on the Cornfield. Colin Granger also fished along the Cornfield to land 5 fish on buzzers. On the boats season ticket holder Pete Fisher enjoyed great sport landing 23 fish on a gold headed mayfly nymph on the point with black and red buzzers on the droppers fished on a floating line. Pete found the fish in Biggin Bay and near the Overflow. Another season ticket holder getting into the action was Tony Parker and partner David Holroyd who landed 45 fish to the boat all on buzzers from Toft, Biggin Bay and Rainbow Corner. David East and Tony Broadway enjoyed good sport on the boat landing lovely silver fish back drifting with a di 7 and tubes. The pair found the bets area to be X buoy and going over Musborough Shoal. Alan Guest and Andy Dowell used the rudder with very similar tactics to land 12 fish to the boat in their afternoon session.
Thursday was a warm sunny day with the winds remaining in the North with just a hint of Easterly. Ed Douglas landed 13 on buzzers and dries. Ed used buzzers fishing over Lincroft Shoal in the morning before switching to dries in Dunn’s Bay during the evening. Simon Hill and members from the police team enjoyed good sport landing 24 between the 4 of them with the best of the sport coming from down the Farnborough Bank wall using a mix of buzzers and blobs. In- house guide Lee Henfrey took to the water once more with John O’Hara. Lee continued his great guiding record this year with another 20 plus fish haul for John. The pair fished around the outlet for the treatment works in the morning before moving to the Farnborough Dam in the afternoon. The best tactic being either buzzers fished under the bung or a blue flash damsel booby fished on a midge tip. The boats of Mr A McKenzie with partner Robertson and Chambers and McGill, also enjoyed fantastic sport landing 44 fish and 35 fish to the boats on gold head buzzers fished in Toft.
Another warm sunny day with light winds greeted anglers on Friday. Barclays held their annual boat competition with 24 rods landing a total of 101 trout representing a rod average of 4.2. The best tactics in the match were buzzers and nymphs fished in Toft and Rainbow Corner on a Di 3 line. Season Ticket holder Peter Elliott landed 17 rainbows with the first 4 coming to dries early and the rest later on buzzers. Peter fished around Toft and Rainbow Corner. Martyn Moore also enjoyed a great days buzzer sport on Toft using deep buzzers. He fished from an anchored boat to land 26 good rainbows & some very large perch. Dry fly lover Kevin Rees kicked off his boat season in fine form landing 16 fish all on Bob’s Bits. Eileen Chatwin also used dries to land 12 from Biggin Bay. Richard Pelly came for the last four hours to take advantage of the evening rise and landed 7 on Big Red’s. Ian Reeve and Chris Aubrey fished in Toft to land 18.
Bright and flat calm all day where the conditions that greeted anglers Saturday. It was certainly a day for the sun cream. Dave Adams used buzzers to land 10 fish from Toft and D & J Craig landed 14 between them also on buzzers but from Lincroft Point. John Pearson and J Warwick fished the last four hours to land 14 fish on dries and buzzers. Messrs R & N Ring fished orange buzzers in Toft to boat 21. Another angler getting into good sport on the buzzer was Richard Reeve who fished for the afternoon to land 13 fish.
Yet more sun with winds in the East (when there was any breeze) on Sunday. Keith Harding and Mike Clarke enjoyed good sport on buzzers fished under the bung over Lincroft shoal in the morning before moving to the Overflow later in the day. Laurence Foster and boat partner D Webb fished along the Cornfield and Rainbow Corner to land 26 on buzzers and nymphs. Mr Gourlay landed 25 fish from Lincroft Point and down the Cornfield using blobs on a Di 3 sinking line. Out on the boats Jim Smith and Ed Douglas had a cricket score day with over 70 fish to the boat catching on a variety of methods and areas. Starting the day at Lincroft Point on washing lined buzzers they caught well before moving onto the shoal once again catching well. After this they moved up towards the top dam wall catching on buzzers, and also a gold arsed cat booby fished on a di 3. The pair also found this method working in the corner of the Hensborough bank before finishing off on dries through the middle.
Looking forward to coming next week, the good weather looks set to continue with temperatures into the 20s for most of the period. This will continue to increase the water temperature and hopefully provide even more top of the water sport.
