Fishery Report: Week ending Sunday 30th August
The government has announced that mandatory Face Coverings are to be worn within all shops in England from Friday 24th July. These can be a Buff type, scarf or mask etc.
This mandatory rule will cover our shops / lodges.
Great conditions were forecast on Monday with light winds and overcast skies, although the sun did make an appearance later, knocking the fish off the feed a bit. Draycote season ticket holder Kevin Rees landed 8 fish on dries with a crippled midge being his best pattern. He fished from a boat around J Buoy heading towards the Farborough Dam. Will Hunt fished in Rainbow Corner using a Green Peter and a Black Hopper on an intermediate line to land 6 fish. All Water season ticket holder Paul Walker landed 6 fish from Toft and also Biggin Bay on buzzers. Overall it was a challenging day, with a number of anglers landing no more than a brace. This may have been due to the sun and the angling pressure from the previous days competition.
With the wind speeds too high the boats did not go out on Tuesday. The only two fish of the day were caught from the bank by Ken Key and Mr R Moseley, whos’ catch weighed in at 4lbs 8 oz.
Wednesday, although still a bit blustery, proved to be a much better day out on the water. Ian Reeve and Matt Pittaway had 11 fish to the boat between them on Diawl Bachs, Daddies and Hoppers. Paul Taylor caught 10 fish from a boat on Montanas and Olive Damsels. Mr Tony Harris caught one from the bank by the overflow but the thick weed relieved him of another 4. Tony Broadway caught 4 fish from the bank using Floating Fry patterns.
Thursday was overcast with a light southerly breeze and fairly cool temperatures. There were plenty of fish topping early on in the day around J and T buoy, and Croft shoal. Throughout the day the best of the fishing seemed to be in the top few feet of the water with fish coming to dries and Sparkler Boobies on a washing line. Although the ever popular Diawl Bach accounted for a few fish, a Black Muskins with a red thorax put quite a few fish in the boat for many of the anglers. Season permit holder Bob Smith caught 6 fish from the bank at Lincroft point and the Tower bank using Snakes, Pin Fry patterns and Minkie Boobies. Ian Richardson caught 3 fish from the Tower bank on small Minkie patterns. Kevin Rees had 10 fish to the boat on dries such as Crippled Midge.
Friday was overcast and fairly calm to start, with the wind picking up through lunchtime. The rain that was forecast didn’t arrive until much later in the day, giving anglers a bit of respite. The Fly Dressers Guild were out in force, practising for their match tomorrow, and played their cards very close to their chests as regards returns. However, the rod average remains good for the time of year, with the water temperature now dropping to a balmy 17 degrees, and water visibility is good. The fish seem to be feeding sporadically on the fry and have been caught using lures such as Snakes and Humungus. They are still holding in the top few feet of the water column and are also being taken on dries such as big reds. The washing line has accounted for a good number of fish using Black Muskins or Diawl Bachs, with a sparkler Booby on the point.
Saturday started very cool with a strong north westerly breeze and once again overcast. The breeze strengthened through the middle of the day and made for uncomfortable conditions across the lodge side of the reservoir. Dean and Neil Shilton ventured out in a boat to land a dozen fish between them, one of which was a 5lb brown. Mr S Proffitt caught 6 fish from the bank using Floating Perch patterns in Biggin Bay. Season Permit holder Chris Pallot caught 4 fish from a boat on a DI 3 and Olive Snakes. Saturday also had 44 members of the Fly Dressers Guild Fish the John Watts Competition here at Draycote water. Conditions were a little tough, but the anglers managed to net a total of 143 fish between them, for a competition rod average of 3.25. The competition was won by the team from Thames Valley Invictas with a total of 22 fish for 35lbs. In second place were the Surrey Snakes with 19 fish for 36lbs 2 oz, closely followed in third place by New Haylie Fly Fishers with 16 fish for 29lbs 14oz. Well done to all those who took part.
Sunday was a bright and breezy start with a bit of a nip in the air, and thankfully not too much water in the boats. Mr Jones and his friends visiting us from Wales on a 3 day package, had a total of 57 fish between them on various patterns and methods such as Dries, a washing line with cormorants or a Sparkler Booby on the point, and Pulling Snakes on a fast Glass. Jim Smith and Ed Douglas also enjoyed a good day out in a boat , catching 30 fish between them. Jim and Ed said that they fished all over the reservoir using various methods such as Dries, a washing line with buzzers, and Tubes fished on an intermediate line.
Mr D Eames had 19 fish to the boat using various methods all fished over open water. Season permit holders Matt Pittaway and Ian Reeve had 9 fish to the boat between them using Perch Fry patterns and Dries.
