 Yet again, Draycote anglers enjoyed an epic start to the new season. Despite enduring wintery squalls, ninety six anglers braved a chilling & very windy opening day last Friday to find sport fast & furious throughout the venue. A total of 223 trout were killed with a further 1,051 caught & released. Bank &boat anglers alike caught consistently with too many fine bags recorded to mention any individual rods by name.

Spectacular sport continued throughout the opening weekend  with ninety one rods on Saturday bringing a further 1,412 fish to net for a rod average of 15.5  Sinking lines , particularly intermediates, were proving to be the preferred line choice with many fish being found holding about three to four feet down. Most anglers were catching on a variety of pulling tactics & as regards lure choice the “black & green” theme seemed to prevail for most with tadpole patterns, snakes, Pitsford Peas & Montana all taking their share.

 Much the same was repeated on Sunday although more anglers targeted fish with Diawl Bachs and buzzers, particularly in Toft. James Collins deserves a mention as he got into some beautiful wintered fish including a 51/2lbs rainbow and a wonderfully marked 41/2 lbs brownie which he returned to the water. Sixty four rods netted 913 trout for a rod average of 14.2

In order to maintain the accuracy of our records could all anglers please ensure that they fill in the catch return sheet before departure.  If not in the lodge it will be found on the counter in the gutting room next door. ALL ANGLERS MUST BOOK OUT PRIOR TO LEAVING THE SITE

Boat anglers are also politely reminded of the ruling that there is no anchoring within 100 yards of any pontoon or aerators. This is especially relevant to the harbour pontoon as its own mooring chains & anchors extend out a considerable distance from the end of the harbour & are easily fouled.

Bank Anglers car passes should be, booked prior to coming fishing as we only have a limited number available.

Boat anglers may wish to note that we now have a rudder for hire at the daily rate of £7. It can be pre booked at the time you make your boat booking.

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 22th November 2015

This week has seen the fishery hit with strong winds, meaning that on Wednesday and Saturday boats were unable to go out at all, with conditions for the rest of the week being unfavourable. Although despite the conditions the anglers have continued to catch 482 trout giving a road average of 3.35.

The strong winds and cool temperatures have meant the fish have remained tight into the banks and the shallows of the shoals. Towards the end of the week minus evening temperatures and cold days have started to chill the water, this will hopefully mean that the final week is filled with fish hitting the fry in an attempted to get much needed protein before the winter really kicks in.

Due to the high winds the boat fishing has not been as productive as previous weeks with correct presentation being a challenge in the blustery conditions. However those that have done well off the boats this week have found success on snakes, Zonkers and Minkies fished on 3 inch per second sinking lines and intermediates. Mr B Burton had great sport Monday afternoon landing 8 trout in 4 hours all falling to black and green snakes.

The bank is continuing to fish well with the best tactics being to fish close into the bank with either floating fry patterns often teamed with small nymphs or Minkies. The best lines have been either floater when the wind has been slightly calmer or hover lines when fishing into the wind just in order to try and insure the line and flies are not blown around.  Some of the best catches of the week came when the wind was at its strongest. On Wednesday a day plagued with strong winds season ticket holders John Dews & Tony Broadway had great catches of 14 & 7 from the Hensborough Bank. Jim Hall also had a great day Wednesday landed 6 fantastic rainbows which tipped the scales at 17lb 5oz.

On Sunday we hosted the annual Fur & Feather match with 38 anglers fishing for the chance to take home a fantastic Christmas hamper and boxes of wine. The day was a cold one with temperatures not reaching much above 0 all day. The high winds of the day before had passed the anglers where greeted with a much calmer day, in fact the match started in the flat calm. The rod average for the day was 2.5, although a number of people had their 8 fish limits. The best methods on the day were snakes or tubes fished on 3 or 5 inch per second lines. With the best areas being Farborough spit, the inlet, Lincroft point, Farborough bank and around the pontoon. Some cracking fish where to be caught as well several over 4lb with the biggest falling to Lee Henfrey a cracking rainbow of 5lb 14oz. As well as winning the prize for the biggest fish Lee won the day with 8 fish for 24lb 6oz meaning he walked away with the Christmas hamper. In second place was Peter Elliot with 8 fish for 22lb 11oz and taking third was Yousef Dar with 8 fish for 20lb 14oz.

Confirmation of Non Native Shrimp

The Environment Agency has now confirmed the presence in Draycote Water of the non-native shrimp called Dikerogammarus Haemobaphes (DH)

To stop the spread of the species we will continue to follow the recommended Check – Clean – Dry procedures for bank & boat anglers & have set up a hose down area in front of the lodge

• Check – All clothing and equipment, WADERS, WADING BOOTS, NETS, DROGUE, ETC should be thoroughly inspected and any visible debris (mud, plant or animal matter) should be removed and left at the water body where it was found. Particular attention must be paid to the seams and seals of boots and waders. Any pockets of pooled water should be emptied.

• Clean – Equipment should be hosed down or pressure-washed on site. Equipment should be carefully contained, e.g. in plastic bags, if they are being transported to a wash down point. Washings should be left at the water body where the equipment was used. Do not wash down any equipment off site as it would potentially contaminate other water courses.

• Dry – Thoroughly drying is the best method for disinfecting clothing and equipment. Boots and nets should be hung-up to dry. Equipment should be thoroughly dry for 48 hours before it is used elsewhere. Some non-native species can survive for as many as 15 days in damp conditions and up to 2 days in dry conditions, so the drying process must be thorough.

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 15^th November 2015.

 A reporting period which seems to have been primarily one for the bank anglers. The start, middle & end of this week saw us experiencing winds similar to the beginning of the season & three whole days were completely lost to boat anglers. Nevertheless, with the banks still on fine form, sport was often hectic with many fish still searching the margins.  We welcomed 129 anglers to the venue during the week & a total of 480 trout were brought to the net for a weekly rod average of 3.72

As ever, some notable results shine through. On the bank on Monday Trevor Riches caught five to Minkies including a 5lbs Brownie which he returned. Mr Goodwin fished a combination of Midge Tip with a Biscuit FAB + red buzzers and brought eleven fish to net. Many anglers are reporting multiple follows with fish often coming short. Use of smaller, slimmer patterns has frequently combatted this. On Tuesday in windy conditions Mick Cronin managed thirteen to fry patterns & on Wednesday, still on the bank, Tony Broadway explored Toft Shallows with his Minkie patterns to land 12. He also reported losing many fish too. Regular Ian Western also found himself amongst the action, releasing rainbows in excess of 4lbs & a 5lbs+ brown in his four fish tally.

With a lull in the winds on Thursday, Ed Douglas was able to go afloat & was rewarded with a ten fish total to his team of Diawl Bachs. Messrs Carter & Walker also went afloat & notched up an eleven fish joint total for their boat. However, Friday saw the return of the gales with the tail end of storm “Abigail” going through and boats were once more confined to the pontoon. Although a few brave anglers ventured onto the banks, the rod average plunged to 0.8. Gordon Slack did extremely well though to land four during a hectic early morning spell.

In contrast, Saturday was a tremendous day for all with 16 anglers returning a 6.25 rod average. Mike Garner fished very shallow water in Toft with a team of slow retrieved Diawl Bachs and caught a total of fourteen. Meanwhile, star of the day was Julian Hubbard, also working Toft but from a boat. He fished small sparkler patterns to land a total of 21, later describing his session as “Brill Fishing!” With the return of the winds once more on Sunday it was a quiet end to the period with just a few anglers out on the banks. Ian Western once more showed his form though with a five fish tally including the catch & release of a 5½lbs+ rainbow.

Forecasts indicate further windy periods to come, so unfortunately we may experience more days with no boats out before the season finally draws to a close. However, given the action on the banks right now, a bank fishing session is well worthy of serious consideration.

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 8^th November 2015.

Recent mild weather has put paid to the thought of using only lures and fry patterns for this time of year, as the fish hear at Draycote continue to be taken on dries such as Bob’ Bits and small hoppers. Diawl Bach’s, buzzers, crunchers and a Hares Ear are also working extremely well. Don’t get me wrong, if you pull a lure past them they’ll come and have a tug at it, and if there’s a floating fry pattern sitting idly in the surface, the trout will give it a good coat of looking at., But all in all, I’ve never seen the place fish so well on such a wide variety of patterns. This weeks rod average was a spectacular 4.4.

The fish seem determined to stick to the shoreline and stay in the top couple of feet of the water. This is providing great sport for the bank anglers were the rule of thumb seems to be, “Stay out of thewater”. Any wading at all seems to spook the fish further out into the reservoir and make them more difficult to catch.

Whilst the bank has fished really well this week, the boats have been following closely behind. Over the shoals, A buoy to the Tower, and Toft shallows, are areas that are holding plenty of fish.The feedback we are getting here in the lodge tells us that you need to keep on the move, and if all else fails, throw a fry pattern at them. One of the favourite methods this week has been to fish a floating fry pattern on a floating line. Fish it similar to a dry fly and every now and then give it a bit of movement, and as long as you’re covering fish, they’ll come and pull it. Indeed the proof of the pudding was Friday, when the Rod Average shot up to 7, with many anglers using this method. Don’t be bashful when it comes to the middle of the reservoir either. The open water is still producing it’s fair share of bigger, quality Rainbows. There are also some good browns’ being caught at the moment. These fish seem to be showing up mainly around the Tower bank and down in Toft near the swans nest.

On Monday Mr P Davies caught 6 fish, including a 4lb rainbow and a 3lb 4oz brown on snakes and sparklers.

On Tuesday Draycote member, Mr Tony Broadway, had 17 fish from the bank.

Mr L Tones, also fishing on Tuesday, had a total of 12 fish from the bank, on an Intermediate line with minkies and black and green lures. He said that the last hour on the Cornfield was “great sport”.

Mr A Topping caught 13 fish using skinny Diawl Bachs.

Mr E Hughes from London fishing for two days, brought a total of 15 fish to the boat on a DI 3 sweep and minkies.

Mr Steve Mcgregors party from Scotland, taking advantage of a 3 day package, caught a total of 76 fish between them, giving them a rod average of 6.3.

Mr Colin England and Mr Tony Plummer had a good day out on Thursday with 10 fish each to the boat.

On Friday Mr Gordon Slack and Mr Brian Warwick did very well, with 14 fish each from the bank.

Mr Jim Hall, also fishing from the bank on Friday, had a good day returning 10 good fish.

On Saturday Mr Mike Garner netted 11 fish in Toft in very windy conditions

Also on Saturday, Thornton member Mr Mark Hunt, caught 8 fish, also in very testing conditions.  

Mr Ray Cramp caught 6 fish on Sunday from the bank, all on the blob.

The Severn Trent Rangers have reported bank anglers bringing their dogs along to either sit in their vehicle or accompany them on the bank. Anglers should note that dogs are not allowed around the reservoir under any circumstances.

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 1^st November 2015

We’ve had a fairly mild week as regards the weather hear at Draycote. A few cold starts have led into quite mild afternoons for the most part with light breezes allowing for some enjoyable fishing.  A strong southerly wind on Friday saw the boats restricted to the Hensborough bank for the first couple of hours, until it calmed down enough for them to explore the rest of the reservoir. Saturday and Sunday then where a different matter altogether, with temperatures into the 20’s

Draycote once again is in good form with no sign of things slowing down, and the fish continuing to be taken on a wide variety of patterns. Normally at this time of year it’s mainly fry patterns or bust, but because of the mild temperatures, dries, nymphs, buzzers and the ever popular Diawl Bach are all accounting for good bags of fish from every corner of the water. Toft again seems to be absolutely teeming with fish, with both boat and bank anglers recording some excellent catches from there. Lincroft point is also fishing well as is Biggin Bay. The Tower bank sees the patient angler hunting the big brownies that appear from time to time, and the Hensborough bank, steady throughout the season, is still producing some great sport.

Most bank anglers tell me that wading in to the water just spooks the fish and it’s best to keep your feet dry. Indeed, nearly all the feedback I’ve had this week has been about fish being caught in very shallow water and very near to the bank, or under water features such as the shoals.

So, if you’ve tucked you’re gear away for the season, you might want to think again. With mild weather conditions and a weekly rod average of 4.0, Draycote is certainly worth one more go.

Brian Allwood, one of our members, visited twice this week and caught 22 fish in total, all from the bank.

Mr A Bettles had a good day on Tuesday with 18 fish again from the bank.

Mr E Hughes,  visited us again this week for two days and using DI3 and DI5 sweep lines, had over 30 fish to the boat on minkies and black and green lures.

Mr B Theobald caught 13 fish from the bank on Wednesday using buzzers and Diawl Bach’s.

On Friday, Les Watson and Bob Robinson, again fishing from the bank, caught 8 and 5 respectively.

Draycote member Mr Tony Parker, caught 8 fish from a drifting boat on Saturday, all on dries.

Draycote regular Mr Mick Cronin had 9 fish from the bank on Saturday.

On Sunday a hat full of anglers did really well from the bank in bright sunshine including Mr Vince Aronica , Mr Ray Cramp, Mr L Drakeford and Draycote member Mr Dennis Tidmarsh.   ,

Draycote weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday 25^th October 2015

This week the weather has been a bit unsettled here at Draycote, with some cold starts leading into mild afternoons. The mainly northerly breeze has made for comfortable fishing from the northern shore, where the fish have been holding tight in to the bank.

 The better fishing has been with fry patterns although some of the regulars would disagree. Some anglers are still catching on Diawl Bachs and buzzers, with just a few fish still insisting on a small dry.

Fishing lures can be frustrating at the moment depending on how you look at it, with plenty of nips, plucks, turns and follows before you hook into a fish. But there is some great fun to be had with this method and it can create a very exciting days fishing. Also a floating fry pattern can provide some great sport, either popped through a wave or fished static.

On Monday and Tuesday Mr Hughes from London, used DI 3’s and DI5’s to catch a total of 30 fish, on snakes and minkies.

The usual suspects of John Dews, Tony Broadway, Gordon Slack, Jude Tuffs, Ken Rawlings and Brian Allwood,  where here on Tuesday and caught a good number of fish between them.

Mr Keiron and Mr Brendan Thomas fished with us on Wednesday and Thursday and although their second day didn’t go so well, they did boat 27 fish between on Wednesday.

On Friday Mr Norman Perkins and Lord Richard Dayman did well from a drifting boat, catching 12 and 11 fish respectively.

On Sunday there was a good turn out for the John Hanlon Memorial match here at Draycote. Second place went to John Hanlon and Adrian Burton, first place went to Jamie Warwick and Richard Hanlon. And the winner of the John Hanlon Memorial Trophy for the biggest fish was Jamie Warwick. Well done to all those who took part.

Fur and Feather

This seasons Fur and Feather will take place on 22^nd November. The format is a boat pairs competition and will be fished to Fishery rules, no rudder. Please contact the lodge to make your booking as places are filling up quickly.

SPEEDING

Could all bank anglers please note that there is a speed limit on the perimeter road here at Draycote. The speed limit is 15mph and must be strictly adhered too.

DOGS

The Severn Trent Rangers have reported bank anglers bringing their dogs along to either sit in their vehicle or accompany them on the bank. Anglers should note that dogs are not allowed around the reservoir under any circumstances.

The Environment Agency has now confirmed the presence in Draycote Water of the non-native shrimp called Dikerogammarus Haemobaphes (DH)

To stop the spread of the species we will continue to follow the recommended Check – Clean – Dry procedures for bank & boat anglers & have set up a hose down area in front of the lodge

• Check – All clothing and equipment, WADERS, WADING BOOTS, NETS,DROGUE, ETC should be thoroughly inspected and any visible debris (mud, plant or animal matter) should be removed and left at the water body where it was found. Particular attention must be paid to the seams and seals of boots and waders. Any pockets of pooled water should be emptied.

Draycote weekly fishing report w/e Sunday 18th October 2015

A very good week overall with a total of 1339 trout netted by 312 rods for a weekly average of 4.29

Given the time of year, the weather this week has been generally kind to us. Although pleasant, at times during the start of the week, we did experience some extremely bright, sunny conditions. This made things difficult during the morning sessions. However, the afternoons tended to cloud over with a marked improvement in sport. Generally, fry patterns have provided the best of the action with floating fry drawing fish for boat & bank angler alike. Bank anglers especially have done well using a floating fry as the basis of a washing line set up.  Most fish were coming to investigate the fry pattern but actually succumbing   to small buzzer or diawl bachs fished on the droppers. At times fish have been feeding very tight to the margins. Remember not to spook them offshore by unnecessary wading or disturbance…..Although similar tactics have worked for boat anglers, most have done better using intermediates or Di3&5 and exploring the water column, again with fry based patterns. Snakes, in various colours have also accounted for a lot of fish. Some have succeeded still with dries, but unfortunately, the best of the dry fly action appears to now be behind us.

On Monday the Martindale/Shutter boat partnership saw nine netted & both had rainbows of 4lbs 4oz. Kevin Rees caught 8 during a short, but hectic, bank session using very small diawl bachs “washing lined” as mentioned above. Tony Broadway experienced a red letter session with a fabulous brace that dreams are made of – a brown of 6lbs 8ozs followed by a 5lbs rainbow, both from Biggin Bay! The brownie took his own tied Cat’s Whisker cum Zonker pattern. Meanwhile, Eugene Hughes was fishing both sides of Toft from the boat using Floating Fry, Snakes & Minkies.  He netted a total of 22. Dave Adkins also found six rainbows for 17lbs 12oz& his bag included a 5lbs 8oz rainbow.

Dennis Jones was out on the banks as usual on Wednesday. He enjoyed a productive morning session with a dozen to the net, mostly to his size 14diawl bachs propped up with a floating fry. In the boat once more, Eugene Hughes searched all over & found fry feeders deep. He deployed Minkies on a Di8 and put thirteen in the net by the end of his session which he ended in Toft where the fish came up towards the end of the afternoon. Terry Tappenden & Tony Broadway caught ten each on the bank on Thursday with Tony landing another fine rainbow of 5lbs. John Dickens also caught & released “Nice Big Brownie” from the bank whilst Howard Rutter in a boat netted six on buzzers. George Leaton made the drive up from West London again on Friday & rewarded with a nine fish catch from the boat. Ian Richardson commented on his “excellent” bank session with nine to the net from Biggin Bay  whilst Ivor Bullock, just down the bank in Dunn’s Bay, took eight to skinny size 14 Diawl Bachs.

We were pleased to host the army teams for three days afloat with a practice day on Friday followed by matches on the Saturday & Sunday. They fished to a limited two fish kill, followed by catch & release. Their abilities are reflected in their rod averages as you will see from their combined results which I have copied & pasted:-  

Fri 16^th 25 anglers – kept x 44, released 152 (rod average 7.8).

Sat 17^th 34 anglers – kept x 68, released 121(rod average 5.5).

Sun 18^th 33 anglers – kept 47, released 105 (rod average 4.6).

Best boat pair on 17^th – Lindsay Simpson and Bill Howell – 4 fish for 10lb 10oz plus C&R bonus of 32lb (2lb per fish) – 42lbs 10oz.

Best boat pair on 18^th – Sean Hanlon and Simon Harris – 4 fish for 12lb 2oz (no C&R bonus fished 18^th).

Best fish over 17^th/18^th – John Twine 5lb 5oz rainbow; we had another 4 at 4lb plus.

Congratulations to all who took part.

With mild conditions currently prevailing, prospects of continuing good sport look good. With another six weeks of the season remaining there is still much sport to be had.

Draycote weekly fishing report w/e Sunday 11th October 2015

Despite yet another week of varying weather conditions the sport here at Draycote remains consistently good.  Rain on Monday turned in to blustery wet conditions for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, which then gave way to bright sunny conditions for the remainder of the week.

There has been a lot of surface activity with fish seen moving in all areas of the reservoir. By far the best areas here are still dotted along the northern shore, from the Cornfield all the way to the Tower bank. These areas still continue to produce for both boat and bank Anglers unlike Rainbow Corner, which has fished well for boat anglers but alas seems to produce very little from the bank. Toft too, is holding a good head of fish but proved a bit difficult towards the end of the week.

Most of the action is still to be had in the top couple of feet of the water, although fry patterns fished on a DI 5 worked very well for some of the visiting anglers this week. Fish are still coming to dries and the ever consistent Diawl Bach. Though now as we move through October, floating fry patterns, Minkies and the like are really coming in to form.  The overall rod average for the week was 3.5.

On Monday Paul Donegan and Stephen Francis Caught and released 19 fish using sinking lines, on a mixture of poppers, snakes and blobs. They fished mostly around T & S buoy and near the front of the pontoon.

Ed Douglas, one of our members, went fishing on two occasions this week and caught 9 and 12 respectively. One of them was a brownie of about 5 lbs.

Mr A Grant’s party, visiting us on a 3 day package, caught a total of 138 fish between them using various fry patterns fished at different depths.

The Paisley Patterns from Scotland, again taking advantage of our 3 day package, “Really enjoyed the fishing”, catching over 98 fish between them.

On Thursday the boat pairs of Mr Dobbie and Mr Moran, and Mr Sichi and Mr Peline, did very well on dries and FAB blobs, catching 45 fish between them.

Cheshire Police fished a match here on Thursday where 18 rods caught 71 fish giving them a rod average of 3.9.
