Draycote Water Fishing Report w/e Sunday 26^th July  2015

The weather has been very unsettled this past week with a mixture of wet and windy conditions interspersed with some sunny spells. With the wind changing direction and swirling around a lot, casting a straight line onto the water has been a bit of a challenge to say the least. The water clarity is still hampered a bit by the slight algae bloom but again this isn’t causing too much of a problem, as it tends to get blown into one corner of the reservoir by mid morning.

The fishing in general has been very good this week, and once again most of the fish caught have been in the top four or five feet of the water. The best methods have been a floating line with either dries, or a team of nymphs on a washing line. Intermediate lines are also working well, with either a damsel, a Humungus booby, or a cats whisker.

The boat anglers have done pretty well this week, but the bank fishing, with the rise in water temperature, has been a bit of a hit and miss affair. The bank anglers tell me that they are seeing plenty of fish and hooking into them, but landing them is a different matter.

On Monday Mr Bob Wallinger caught 13 good fish from the boat, the best of which was 4lbs.

Season Ticket holder Mr Ken Rawlings caught a total of 8 fish from the bank on Tuesday, including 5 brownies.

Also fishing on the bank on Tuesday was Mr Stan Hillman. Stan caught 4 fish, one of which was an 8lb brown.

Mr Ed Douglas caught  13 fish on dries from a drifting boat on Wednesday .

Mr John Dickens and Mr Kevin Rees, also fishing on Wednesday, caught 16 fish on dries.

Tony Broadway and John Dews did pretty well from the bank on Wednesday catching 16 fish between them, all on buzzers.

Mr Richard Pelly and Mr Gary Turner took an evening boat out on Thursday and caught 8 fish, all on dries.

The best boat fishing has by far been in Rainbow corner. But other good areas have been A and B buoy, the Aerators, Biggin Bay and over middle and croft shoal.   

The best bank areas have been Rainbow corner, The over flow, the tower bank, and Biggin bay.

The best flies are, Buzzers, Dawl Bachs and Crunchers. Daddies, hoppers and bobs bits. Damsels, Humungus boobies or a cats whisker.

Draycote has fished reasonably well this week, and considering the warmer weather conditions, has still produced a weekly rod average of 2.5. There has been a slight Algae bloom on the water all week, but by mid morning the breeze will generally tend to have pushed this in to one corner of the reservoir. Indeed,  anglers have reported finding fish coming to dries up through the Algae bloom, so it isn’t causing us too  many problems at the moment.

Despite  the very changeable weather, the majority of fish have again been caught in the top couple of feet of the water, with the best methods being either Buzzers or Dawl Bachs on a washing line, or dries. A Damsel on a slow intermediate line has also worked very well, especially over the aerators. Draycote is still giving up more than it’s fair share of fish in the 4 to 5 lb bracket, and. It’s not uncommon to see two or three  4lb plus fish in an anglers bag. It seems obvious to me, as I’m sure it does to you ,that we are benefitting from one if not two, very mild winters.     

The bank fishing is  more sporadic of late, as the fish tend to drift into  the deeper cooler water. The best times for the bank at this time of year are the early morning and late evenings.

Boats are now  edging the better sport with fish being caught mostly at the top end of the reservoir. Particularly in Rainbow corner,  around A and B buoy, and over the Aerators. The shoals such as Musborough and Middle shoal are also well worth a go. Toft Shallows is still holding plenty of fish, but they are just not playing the game. (I’ll nip down and have a word with them tonight.)

This weekend Draycote hosted  the HASSRA Fly Fishing Competition and the Midland Counties Competition. All competitors seemed to enjoy themselves out on the water, despite the sometimes “damp” conditions. The individual winner of the Midland counties match was Mark Redfern with 8 fish for 28lb 10oz. Well done to all those who took part.

FISHING REPORT

The week opened well on Monday, with a great days fishing, according to the comments left by our anglers. Top of the water sport on dries seemed to be the order of the day, with names such as Big Reds, Sedges and the Yellow Owl, returning one of our best daily rod averages so far this season . Indeed the overall weekly rod average was a very good 3.6.  The week continued getting warmer, but still the fish didn’t seem to push down , even with the bright sunshine and blustery conditions on Thursday, anglers were still reporting taking fish on dries or buzzers on a floating line.

Both Thursday and Friday were very busy days out on the water, with a large number of anglers practising for this past weekends competitions. On Saturday we saw the arrival of the Engalnd Eliminator and Derby Fly Fishers Club competition, and on Sunday Draycote hosted both the Scierra pairs, and The Steve Parton Memorial organised by Alex Booth Fly Fishers.

Some found it a bit difficult on Saturday, with anglers reporting that they were struggling to get fish to the boat. But the reservoir fished well overall.  In the England Eliminator, 52 rods caught a total of 310 fish for a competition rod average of 5.9.The overall winner was Peter Elliott, with 12 fish for 34lb12oz including time bonuses. Mick McLintic recorded the best fish of the competition, with a rainbow of 6lb12oz. During the weigh in, there were15 fish over 4lb in weight brought to the scales.

For their competition,  Derby Fly Fishers Had 9 rods catch a total of 53 fish, for a rod average of 5.8.

Sunday dawned with cloudy skies and a stiff breeze, a good day for fishing (provided the fish have read the rule book). The Scierra pairs match fished very well, with the winning pair of Graeme Bell and Neil Deakin Taking 16 Fish for 48lbs 5oz. Again it was great to see a high number of grown on 4lb rainbows recorded. The overall rod average for the match was 4.9.  

The anglers fishing in the Steve Parton Memorial also seemed to have a good day out, with the match being won by Baz Street, with 8 fish for 23lbs 6oz.

Job Title:        Draycote Fishery Ranger

Position:        Full Time

Location:        Draycote Water, CV23 8AB

Reports to:     Fishery Management (UK) Ltd, Draycote Fishery Management

You will be primarily based at Draycote water fishery, a popular Midlands reservoir offering fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout with the fishing season 4th March to 30th November.

You will be joining a team of permanent and part time staff based at the various fisheries under the Management of Fishery Management (UK) Ltd. You will be required to be smart and presentable at work; the Company will provide work clothing. You will also be expected to communicate and offer fishing advice in a knowledgeable and helpful way.

You will be working to a monthly rota working any 5 days out of 7, including weekends which will include, split shifts. As is the nature of the fishing season, you will be expected to work 40 weeks averaging 43.55 hours during March to November, working 12 weeks averaging 21.5 hours per week during the period December to February. Salary will be paid by 12 equal monthly amounts. Some overtime may be required by mutual consent.

Holiday entitlement 28 days with 7 days allowed during period March to November

You may, on occasion, be required to cover at our other venues; travel allowance at a pre-agreed level will be included.

Draycote is a popular visitor’s attraction operated by our Landlord Severn Trent Water. There is also a popular and busy sailing club; you will be expected to build up a good working relationship with the various other stakeholders who use the reservoir.

The position will include some lone working and when required, responsibility for securing the site at the end of the day.

Draycote Fishery Ranger

Location-                   Draycote Water, Rugby, CV23 8AB

Hours-                        2000 hour per annum – pay scale £8.00 – £9.50 p/h

Peak months; March to November – 40 weeks average 43.5 hours per week

Off Peak months; December to February – 12 weeks average of 21.5 hours per week

Responsible to –      Fishery Manager

Key Activities-

•           To ensure that Customers have an enjoyable and safe experience when using our facilities.

•           To manage Staff in a constructive and professional manner.

•           To ensure that our facilities are safe and comply with the Company’s legal obligations in respect of Health and Safety, Trading Standards, Environmental and all other relevant legislation.

•           To comply with our obligations to the site’s landlord, Severn Trent Water.

•           To build constructive working relationships with other site users, such as the Sailing Club & restaurant.

Specific Requirements-

1.         Conduct regular tours of the reservoir to ensure that Anglers are safe, and have the necessary Day Ticket, EA Licence. This also includes building a strong rapport with Anglers and offering guidance and advice to ensure that they get the most enjoyment possible from their visit.

2.         Ensure that Draycote  fleet of boats (currently 32) along with the pontoon and other boat facilities; such as life jackets, safety boat and outboard motors; are checked on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, to ensure that they are maintained to the highest standard and comply with all relevant Health and Safety requirements.

This includes taking responsibility for the completion of all relevant safety and maintenance records following each inspection.

3.         Manage our team of part time boat staff. This includes rotating shifts, allocating duties, managing performance, conducting induction / Health and Safety training, issuing relevant employment documents such as Employment Contracts, time sheets and weekly pay slips, and ensuring that they are working in a constructive manner to help our Customers.

4.         Checking and accepting delivery of goods to the tackle shop.

5.         Selling day tickets to Anglers in the Tackle Shop / Lodge. 

6.         Using the tackle shop computer to ensure adequate stock levels are maintained in the shop.

7.         Ensure that stock is displayed in the tackle shop to maximise sales.

8.         Conduct / participate in meetings with other site users, such as the Sailing Club, and to help build constructive relationships with them.

9.         Carry out general site maintenance and repairs. If necessary, to liaise with the Company’s Management to arrange for external contractors to carry out necessary maintenance / improvement work.

10.       Conduct monthly Health and Safety checks for the shop, electrical equipment and vehicles. To ensure that up to date Risk Assessments, PAT tests, COSHH assessments, and vehicle maintenance are conducted for the site.

11.       To travel to Foremark when required, to provide additional cover for the Company’s Management.

12.       Locking up and securing the site at closing time.

13.       Ensuring the site is secure and to prevent theft / poaching of stock.

14.       To carry out other reasonable activities as and when required to ensure the smooth running of FM(UK) Ltd’s facilities.

Essential Requirements of the Post Holder- 

1.         Two or more years experience of working at a trout fishery.

2.         Good knowledge of boat and outboard motor maintenance 

3.         Good record keeping.

4.         Ability to use the Company’s computers effectively.

5.         Good Management skills, including the ability to demonstrate positive and constructive communication skills.

6.         Experience of working with the public in a leisure / retail environment.

7.         Health and Safety knowledge relevant to Fishery Management.

8.         Experience in managing Stillwater competitions.

9.       Driving Licence

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 28^th June 2015

Despite the ever changing weather conditions, Draycote continues in good form, with a rod average of 3.7. There are an awful lot of fish getting caught in open water now, especially over the shoals, these are often the trout which are either overwintered or being in the reservoir a while, described by one visiting rod as “proper lumps,” these fish have been falling to both nymphs and dry flies at varying times of the day and in various conditions.

Some anglers have reported fish feeding on pin fry already, and this is no surprise as there are literally thousands of them around the pontoon. The slightly cooler weather has now given way to the longer, warmer evenings of late, and this bodes well for that last 4 hour slot, where we are finally beginning to see a good evening rise.

With these warmer temperatures, the fly hatches have started to come on dramatically and anglers are now reporting fish feeding in or near the surface on a daily basis. A search along the edges of the wind lanes with either buzzers or a team of dries is well worth a go.

Kevin Hart took time off from the lodge to take two guests out guiding; he managed to get them both into double figures working the edges of the wind lanes fishing dries, nymph & buzzers.

Toft Shallows has been the dominant area on the water this week, right up against the nature reserve buoys. But the rest of the reservoir is also fishing very well. Rainbow Corner is holding a lot of fish at the moment, more so towards the inlet and the overflow. Biggin and Dunns bay are also fishing well.

Mr Ceri Jones’ party, visiting us from Wales on Friday and Saturday seemed, by numbers alone, to enjoy themselves. On both days they caught good bags of fish; mainly it seems, on a washing line and dries.

Melvyn Severn fishing with the rudder found the overwintered fish during his visit recording 8 fish for a total weight of 26lb, for those wishing to try the rudder we have one for daily hire.   

It was good to see both Higham Ferrers and Leicester Fly Fishers back here for club matches over the weekend. All seemed to enjoy some good sport out on the water and come in with some good catches. Well done one and all.

This reporting period has best been described as challenging & yet again, it has been affected by the unsettled and unseasonal weather conditions. These have ensured that each day was different. Big winds have at times continued to hamper good sport. As always though there has been some terrific action & albeit spasmodic, increasing opportunities for fishing dries have been presenting themselves.

On Monday Andy Lunn caught four including a 3lbs 8oz rainbow on his dries & Richard Pelly followed on in his evening session with a further four large rainbows to the Big Red. Tuesday was a great day. Season rods Tony Broadway, John Dews & Gordon Slack took a combined total of 27 on the bank & it was great to see Kevin Rees in action with a dozen to his slimline size 14 buzzers. Ron Bevan took his usual morning boat & his catch included a 6lbs rainbow. Messrs Hallam & Nixon also excelled in their boat with 22 to the net on dries – the best brace weighing 4lbs 12 oz & 5lbs. Wednesday was partly hampered by the return of some windy conditions through most of the day followed by some pretty wet late afternoon rain. I was able to enjoy some time on the water with Dave & Chris- two newcomers to the world of fly fishing. After some early fun with some newly introduced brownies (hopefully an investment for the future), I was able to get them into some of the daphnia feeders out over open water. Things really switched on early evening when hot head damsels fished on floating lines proved to be the downfall of five stunning rainbows with the best weighed in at 4lbs 4oz, 4lbs & 3lbs 12oz.

We were pleased to welcome the HMRC back on Thursday for their annual event. However they found tough conditions to contend with for their match in which 42 rods could only manage a total of 68 trout. Flybird Flyfishers Ron Bann, Seamus O’Dare & Micky Toal took the team honours & the 12 fish caught by Seamus crowned him top individual. Congratulations to you all from the Draycote crew. Season rod & secretary of the Draycote Flyfishers, Graham Homer also took to the boat on Thursday finishing with 15 to the net. On the bank, Dave Steer had a surprise when he added a 1lb 8oz roach to his 6 fish bag!

Friday saw the return of Messrs Broadway, Dews & Slack on the bank. This time their joint buzzer caught tally increased slightly to 29. In the boat Mr Hawking netted a 6lbs rainbow. Ian Richardson enjoyed another fine bank session describing it as “fantastic”. He took a total of 17, mostly to the nymph. It was nice to listen to him describe  his encounter the previous week with his magnificent double figure brown from the bank to a hot head diawl bach. Whilst he had been unable to photograph the fish, which was successfully returned to the water, he said he was happy that he would always hold the memory. Nevertheless, should any of you find yourself on your own on the water with no camera &”Moby Dick” in the net, please don’t hesitate to call us in the Lodge. We will always try to get to you by road or safety boat in the hope of getting you that special picture.

The Dempsey/Jones duo were back in action as usual on their Saturday boat & enjoyed great sport with Jim taking a fine 7lbs rainbow in his 4 fish limit for 19lbs. Melvin Severn followed suit with deep lure tactics for his fine 8 fish limit. On Sunday mornings George Leaton makes his weekly pilgrimage to Draycote Water all the way from Hounslow. This week, despite the high winds, his long drive was rewarded with a ten fish haul from the boat. On the bank top honours went to Mr D Harrison whose five fish tally included rainbows at 5 & 6lbs.

Overall a mixed week & if Mother Nature could grant us one wish right now, settled, more seasonal weather patterns would be at the top of the request list.Generally the bank v boat theme has been buzzer tactics, with small skinny patterns, for the bank anglers right now with daphnia feeding fish being taken by the boats anglers mainly on lures & blob type patterns. Location in the water column has been critical as the blooms of light sensitive daphnia rise & fall with the sunlight

Boat anglers are also politely reminded of the ruling that there is no anchoring within 100 yards of any pontoon or aerators. This is especially relevant to the harbour pontoon as its own mooring chains & anchors extend out a considerable distance from the end of the harbour & are easily fouled.

Bank Anglers car passes should be, booked prior to coming fishing as we only have a limited number available.

Boat anglers may wish to note that we now have a rudder for hire at the daily rate of £7. It can be pre booked at the time you make your boat booking.

Draycote Weekly  Fishing Report w/e Sunday 14^th June 2015

Phew, what a week. Again the weather’s been proper off its trolley. (some would say it’d be in good company here.) But at least we’ve had a northerly blowing most of the time ,which brings in the whole of that north shore and makes for good bank fishing.. With a rod average of 4.1 overall, the fishing has been very good this week , dogged on occasion by an algae bloom that was blown into Rainbow Corner. Fortunately the best of the bank fishing has been down in the Cornfield and towards Grays Barn.

Notables this week were, Rod Wilson with 8 fish for 29lbs on Monday, Ian Richardson, who caught a Brownie of 10lb 8oz, and Peter Elliott who had over 40 fish on the boils on Friday using buzzers and blobs. 

This week the arrival of the Police National competition with anglers from all over the country. (It’s no wonder we were all so well behaved)The practice day on Wednesday seemed to go very well as they produced a rod average of 7.2.. Although Thursday was a bright and blustery day which pushed the fish down, the police still returned an excellent match rod average of 3.6,  It was great to be involved with such a competitive and friendly competition, Everybody seemed to be in “High Spirits” and the banter going back and forth was really good. The team competition was won by Avon and Somerset with a combined  weight of 61lb 9oz. Whilst the individual competition was won by Mr Dave Mateer with a bag weight of 31 lb 8oz. Well done one and all who took part and we hope to see all of you back here at Draycote soon.

Draycote Water Weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday 7^th June 2015.

Despite the changing conditions, Draycote is offering some excellent fishing for all anglers. There seems to be plenty of fish holding in the margins, and large shoals of grown on fish coming to the boats in open water.

The weather has once again put us through our paces here, with the wind swinging around from all angles and blowing a lot harder than was forecast at times, and although no damage was done, on Tuesday we witnessed some of the largest waves we’ve seen crashing into the pontoon.

Tosh Storer’s Party, visiting from Scotland, had their fishing disrupted by the weather on Tuesday, but still managed to wiggle a few out from the bank in Rainbow corner. Continuing with their boat fishing on Thursday and judging by their comments, I think they had a good trip.

We’ve also had visiting parties from both Northern and Southern Ireland this week. All of whom left very positive comments on the catch return.  

It was good to see the Civil Service Match back out on the water on Thursday, organised by Frazer McConnell. The match winners were Geoff Taylor and Steven Frakes with 16 fish for 45lb 6oz.

Rather than listing the best areas this week, I can confidently say that the only spot where not many fish have been caught is the Draycote Dam, all other areas are producing good sport, with the best of them being the Cornfield and Toft Shallows.

Best Flies; Black Buzzers, Red Holographic Dawl Bach’s, Nemo Crunchers, Black and Green Lures, Damsels and Orange Blobs. Best lines;  Floaters, midge tips, intermediates, DI5’s and DI7’s.

Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 31^st May 2015

Draycote has continued in rich form this week as both boat and bank anglers have had some fantastic catches. Some of the descriptions that anglers have written on the catch return sheets seems to show that we are getting things about right here at the moment, although not all would agree. Some anglers still seem to struggle a bit on what appears on paper to be a good day. Here at Draycote, if you are having a bit of trouble out there, we would rather you rang us, as by midday or so we usually have a good idea of where the fish are being caught and what is going on out on the reservoir. 

In the past couple of months the fishing has been at its best around the margins of the reservoir, but in the last week or so a number of larger fish are showing up over the shoals and out in open water. These fish are being caught on a wide variety of methods, the mainstay of which has been DI5’S and DI 7’s using blob’s or tube flies.

The weather has remained changeable all week, with this rather persistent westerly pestering the life out of both us and the anglers. This has not hampered the fishing too much as the rod average this week has been 4.7. It seems that as long as you are willing to move around and try different methods, you should have a good day.

Best bank areas; The north shore from Dunns bay all the way down in to Toft. Rainbow corner.

Best boat areas; Dunns bay, Biggin bay, Toft, Farborough spit and Rainbow corner.

Best flies ;Buzzers, Dawl bachs, Nemo Crunchers, Damsels, Montanas, Pitsford peas and the dreaded Orange blob.

Best lines;  Floaters, midge tips, intermediates, DI5’s and DI7’s.
