Report.

Friday the 13^th maybe unlucky for some but not so here at Draycote. The weather has been kind to us this week and the fishing has been excellent. Fish are being caught all around the reservoir from both boat and bank with good numbers of fish falling to small black and green lures and/or black buzzers.

The weekly rod average so far is 8.7

If you are thinking about coming fishing this weekend we still have some places available on both boats and the bank.

Draycote has enjoyed another great start to the new season with some terrific catches recorded throughout our first week [NB: A short 5 day week with opening day being a Wednesday). Over 1500 trout were recorded on opening day alone. Notwithstanding some very windy, chilly & at times squally conditions, 400 anglers visited during the course of the week recording a total of 4,700 fish caught. This represents a weekly rod average of 11.75!

Boat & Bank anglers have enjoyed consistent sport & the whole venue has actually been producing well. In fact it would be hard to specify particular hotspots, although perhaps the most consistent areas, especially for the bank anglers, have been the Tower Bank, Dunns & Biggin Bay. Boats have also done well in Biggin Bay & at times off Lin Croft Point. Toft Shallows have also produced, especially during the milder & warmer spells when buzzer tactics have worked for many.

Overall I think it fair to say that this has been the week for the intermediate lines fished in conjunction with various lures. In terms of patterns, the “black & green” theme has continued.  Gold & hot head damsel patterns have also been hard to beat. Similarly, the Black & Silver Humungus has accounted for a lot of fish. Generally they have been found to be running the shorelines or holding on the drop offs.

There have been too many excellent catches to name them all however, congratulations must go to Mr White who is new to the sport. He caught & released 25 in what he proudly described as his “Best Day Ever!”. Mike Oliver also excelled on Sunday using buzzers whilst Andy Ball simply had a ball describing his day as “Awesome”.

Numerous rainbows in the five pounds bracket have been encountered but the biggest fish recorded so far has been a caught & released Brownie estimated at 8lbs by captor Harry Pinner.

All in all, it has been a fine opening week  with lots & lots of smiling anglers and all bodes well for the season to come. A final cautionary note – do remain mindful of the time of year & make sure that you are well prepared with appropriate clothing.

Draycote Water Opening Day Update Report Thursday 5^th March 2015

The 2015 Draycote season began with a great opening day yesterday. Despite a cold & blustery North Westerly wind, 104 hardy anglers recorded a total catch of 1523 trout equating to a rod average for the day of 14.6

Boats & bank anglers alike enjoyed hectic sport with fish running the shorelines & drop offs around much of the venue.

Various black & green tadpole type patterns + gold head damsels were the order of the day for most.

Intermediate lines were reported by many as being the most productive.

Rainbow Corner, Tower Bank, Dunns & Biggin Bay proved to be excellent locations for both boat & bank. The Cornfield fished well in the afternoon, as did Toft.

Boat & Bank Car Access Pass bookings have been heavy so please call the lodge in advance to avoid disappointment. 

Two boats remain available for tomorrow (Friday), but all the boats are booked for Saturday. Some Bank passes remain for Saturday whilst on Sunday there is capacity on both boat & bank.

Draycote Water Weekly Fishing Report Sunday 30^th November 2014

This final week has seen a slight decline in rod numbers and this has consequently been reflected in the catch returns. Although there was a heavy frost earlier in the week, those who have ventured out have encountered mostly mild weather conditions and reasonably good bags of fish.

Kevin Rees caught 19 good fish from the bank on Monday using buzzers on a washing line.

Gordon Slack, again fishing from the bank, took 6 fish on a variety of patterns which included buzzers and Dawl Bachs.

Colin England and Tony Plummer had 7 a piece fishing from the boat along the Farborough Dam on Tuesday.

Tony Broadway and John Dews , whilst fishing along the north shore on Thursday, had a total of 23 fish between them.

John Haynes caught seven good fish down in Toft from the bank on Saturday.

Anglers have reported catching mainly on patterns such as buzzers, crunchers, dawl bachs and hare’s ears, Showing that whilst the fish are happy to chase a fry pattern or lure, they are less inclined to take them. Most of the time these smaller imitative patterns have been fished either very slow or even static, usually presented on a washing line with a FAB blob on the point..

Now that the season has finished we would like to take the opportunity to thank all our customers and hope that you have enjoyed this past year with us here at Draycote. We hope to see you all back here again next season and wish you all a happy Christmas and a very prosperous new year.

As the end of the season looms ever closer, Draycote is still producing some good sport for those anglers willing to don woolly hats and scarves and brave the elements.

Both bank and boat anglers have been catching fish in good numbers, using a mixture patterns such as lures, floating fry patterns, dawl bachs and buzzers.

The Draycote Fur and Feather match on Sunday got off to a damp start. 37 anglers wrapped up warm against the weather and ventured out to what should have been a very wet and breezy day. However,  the weather was kinder than forecast and despite being a bit soggy at the close of play, the anglers caught a total of 121 fish for a rod average of 3.2.

The best bag of the day was taken by Mr Nigel Keeber – 8 fish for a total weight of 24lb 13oz.

The biggest fish of the day was caught by Mr Simon Peck –  a rainbow of 5lb 5oz.  

A big thank you to all who turned up and supported us on what turned out to be a very successful day.

Draycote Water weekly report week ending Sunday 16th November 2014

I’m afraid to say it hasn’t changed folks. During what has been a week of changing weather conditions Draycote is once again offering some exceptional sport. I didn’t think the water would fish this well for so long. But it has, and there is no sign of this slowing down as we move ever closer to our closing date of Sunday 30^th November 2014.

The bank anglers are having the best of it by far and indeed, whilst out cutting the willow during the week, it seemed that every time we looked up , there were rods bending everywhere.

Kevin Rees, ( A name with which I am sure you are all now familiar ) has visited us this week on two separate occasions, catching a total of 47 fish from the bank using buzzers presented on a washing line with a FAB blob  on the point.

Jude Tuffs did exceptionally well on white minkies down in toft, taking 8 good fish , and returning 21.

Mr Riches, Mr Kelly and Mr Cox also fishing from the bank, had all their sport in the cornfield using a mixture of Minkies and Buzzers.

John Clifford used a mixture of floating fry patterns and buzzers to coax a total of 21 fish to the net on Wednesday, again from the bank.

Friday brought a morning of showers and quite blustery conditions for our day out fishing with guests from both the Visitors Centre here at Draycote and Severn Trent. The weather improved as the day went on and for some, so did the fishing.   Biggest fish of the day went to Severn Trent Ranger  Ady Shaw , weighing in at an awesome 5lb 2oz. Whilst the largest bag of the day went to the deadly duo of Kevin Hart and Sara Cooke, with a total of 16 fish for 27lb. Sara , the more seasoned angler of the two, fished her purple socks off, bagging her 8 fish on a pink booby in Biggin Bay . All those who took part reported having a great day out .

Congratulations to Mr John Hurst , the winner of this weeks free boat draw.

This coming Sunday, 23^rd November, is the Draycote Fur and Feather competition. There are still 3 boats available.  The match will be fished from 9 am until 4 pm to an 8 fish limit under fishery rules, no Rudders. All participants should bring a prize. There will be individual prizes for 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place, and also the biggest fish.

Draycote Water weekly report week ending Sunday 9th November 2014

On reflection it has been a week of weather extremes here at Draycote Water. Following the warmest Halloween on record with a staggering high of twenty two degrees centigrade, Thursday into Friday saw torrential overnight rain and mighty SW winds sweeping down the reservoir. My windscreen first thing this morning was covered in frozen rain & the external temperature gauge hovered between 1 and 3 degrees all the way in. It was so misty for a while first thing that none of the North shore could be seen! So, for those who (quite rightly) have not yet hung up your rods for the season, remember to dress appropriately for the time of year with potentially wintery conditions to be faced. What is certain is that there are still many fine trout to be caught before we close the doors on the 2014 season on 30^th November.

A slowish start to the beginning of the week saw the rod average at just under three for Monday & Tuesday. Tony & Ruth Kirk fished the bank at Toft on Monday &found fish to 3lbs+ on Minkie Boobies presented on floating lines. On Tuesday Tony Broadway ducked & dived around the willow cutters to take a dozen on buzzer patterns. Dave Malpas showed the way in the boat with a catch of ten whilst Brian Allwood took a brown of 4lbs+ in his four fish tally off the bank. Things started to pick up by Wednesday with a jump in the rod average when 27 anglers took 131fish for a rod average of 4.85

Boat & bank anglers alike enjoyed good sport although the bank clearly had the edge with lots of fish running close to the margins and drop offs. Tony Broadway was back again for more of the action –  this time netting 16 on a buzzer & Minkie mix. Bank regular Dennis Jones once more had great sport coaxing ten to the net after resurrecting a classic pattern from the past – an Alexandra. Meanwhile, Mr Litherland & boat partner Mr Tressler went afloat using black & white Nomads to be rewarded with a 25 fish total.

Notwithstanding extremely strong SSW winds on Thursday the trout reacted with gusto & action was being experienced all across the venue. Mike Williams & friends in two boats found fry feeders in Toft and between them the four rods totalled 46! I got afloat with boat regular John Hoskins & it was great to enjoy almost non- stop action down the Farborough Bank dam & off Biggin Bay. All our fish came to floating lines & midge tips in a big wave, perhaps demonstrating that most fish are still feeding high in the water column. Kevin Rees (yet again!!) led the way on the bank fishing a FAB Blob and buzzer washing line in Toft for a total of 25. John Stanley went to the bottom of the Hensborough Bank and caught twelve on bloodworm patterns. Stan Hillman & Mick Cronin, who have both been very consistent in recent weeks, also netted a total of 25 between them from the bank. The rod average for Thursday, with 19 rods on the water, was an amazing 11.89

Mother Nature sadly decided to slow things down on Friday following torrential overnight rain & huge winds shifting into the west. By midday the reservoir looked like the North Sea in a winter storm. Disappointed boat anglers were all off the water by early afternoon. Twelve anglers braved the elements & despite the rod average dipping to 2.75 for the day, hats off  to Gordon Slack whose perseverance on the bank was rewarded with eight fine rainbows caught & released.  Many were also put off by the weather forecasts on Saturday which resulted in only five boats going afloat and not a solitary angler on the bank.

Sunday morning started flat & foggy but it was soon burnt off. Although the morning was really too bright some cloud eventually developed & sport picked up. Fish were bashing fry hard down the Farborough Bank dam & a couple of boats had fun on floating fry patterns. Meanwhile sport became manic in Toft where season rod Dave Adkins fished mainly green & black lures from the bank. He described his session as his best ever, stopping only after hitting a figure of forty fish to the net!

Draycote Water weekly report week ending Sunday 2nd November  2014

Yet another good week at Draycote, although it was a tough and chilly start on Monday with a rod average of only 1.6. Nevertheless, regulars Ray Rouse and John Dickens both managed seven a piece from the bank.

As reported in previous weeks, the fish are feeding mainly on fry, tight up against the banks and other structures. Whilst fry patterns and lures have worked well,  anglers have proved yet again that buzzers on a washing line or dries, are still worth a try.

Warmer weather on Tuesday saw 36 rods take a total of 136 fish for a rod average of 3.77. Brian Allwood put back one rainbow in excess of 6lbs in his 8 fish total from the bank. Dave Adkins also had a field day coaxing 15 on nymphs from Toft Shallows during a brief , but hectic, morning visit.

Floating Fry patterns fished on a dead drift across the ripple brought eleven full finned rainbows to the net for Paul Beasley on Wednesday with many  more takes missed. Paul was in action yet again on Saturday when he teased another 10 fish out on his epoxy fry pattern. Mick Cronin was also in action with the fry feeders on the bank on Wednesday. His eight fish total included five browns. Kevin Rees excelled (yet again) with a total of 21 to buzzers presented on a washing line from the bank at Lin Croft. Tony Parker boat fished the Farborough bank and Toft and took eight rainbows to 5 ½ lbs on a Cruncher and Sparkler Booby combination.

Mark Hunt visited on Thursday hoping to introduce his brother to fry bashers on his first ever visit afloat on Draycote Water. They soon found their targets chasing the roach fry in Biggin Bay. Mark netted ten rainbows to 3 ½ lbs on a mix of Crunchers and Minkie Boobies. His brother added a further three to their total – all caught and released. Mark described it as “great fishing” and later E mailed us to say that all his fish were in excellent condition, all sporting big tails. He did well to have managed to land a “double up” of grown on residents!

Yusuf Dar also fished  on Thursday but stayed on the bank for a change. He caught fourteen in total which included a brown in the 6 – 7 lbs bracket caught and released together with a 5lb rainbow.

One member of staff has this week, on two separate occasions, caught and released two magnificent browns. The first fish weighed about 7 lbs, whilst the second was about 9lbs. We were all really, really pleased for him as I’m sure you can imagine.

Bank Anglers car passes should be, where possible, booked prior to coming fishing as we only have a limited number available

Draycote Water Update Report Thursday 30^th October 2014

Draycote Water continues in good form maintaining a rod average of 3.34 for the first three days of this week. Ninety nine rods have caught a total of 331 fish. Bank anglers are enjoying sport on buzzers & nymphs still as well as a variety of fry imitating patterns. Dave Adkins managed 15 in Toft on Tuesday. Yesterday, Kevin Rees took 21 from the bank to buzzers presented on a washing line. Paul Beasley concentrated his efforts on the fry feeders & netted 11 rainbows – all to floating fry patterns dead drifted across the ripple. Tony Parker stayed afloat and took eight good rainbows to 5lbs 8oz on Crunchers fished in conjunction with a Sparkler Booby. Tom Gay also managed to net a dozen on his boat session.
