 A great weeks fishing at Draycote. The water has improved on it’s recent form with plenty of fish between the 3- 5lb mark being caught. The rise in rod average is obviously due to the recent change in the weather and the fact that the surface temperature of the water has dropped by a few degrees. The water clarity is still reasonably good.

 The fish have yet again remained in the top few feet of the water, and are being caught on a wide variety of methods. Although dry fly fishing has been the order of the day, there has been a good hatch of olive buzzers this week, and some anglers have been using the washing line to great effect.

A good head of brown trout are holding in the top corner of the reservoir and feeding on the fry that have shoaled up around the tower. For the past couple of weeks, these fish have produced some great sport for both the boat and the bank anglers, particularly in the evenings.

Whilst Biggin bay and the other areas of the reservoir are still fishing well, it’s good to see Toft come back into play, with anglers recording large catches of fish just in front of the nature reserve buoys.

Visitors Mr D James and Mr A Camm from Wales, who have been fishing on a 3 day package, have caught  numbers of fish well into the teens on each day on various flies, from floating fry patterns and dries to some of the older patterns such as soldier palmers and grenadiers.

Andy Ross and Dave Adams had an excellent days fishing in Biggin bay, catching a large number of fish on both the washing line and a selection of dries which included shipmans buzzer.

Dave Heseltine was another angler who caught well into double figures in terms of the number of fish, using a Kelly green and pale olive nymphs, down in toft.

Best flies. – Daddies, bobs bits, the yellow owl and shipmans buzzer –  Olive buzzers, soldier palmer, dawl bach and pale olive nymphs. Minkies, humungus, appetizers and cats whiskers.

Best bank areas. – The tower bank, biggin bay, Lincroft point, the cornfield and toft.

Best boat areas.   – The tower, the aerators, Biggin bay, (particularly D to E bouy), Lincroft point and toft.

,Draycote Water mid-week update 21st August 2014

With a significant decrease in both air & water temperatures the Draycote fish have stepped up a gear so far this week & have really come on the feed. From Monday to Thursday 116 rods have caught a total of 615 trout for an impressive rod average of 5.3. Numerous browns to 6lbs 4oz have been recorded from boat & bank. A good hatch of olive buzzer has led to some exceptional sport, especially in Toft. Fry feeding fish have also been very active throughout Biggin Bay & Lin Croft in particular. Daddies & various dries are also still featuring highly in the returns.

There is still boat & bank availability over the Bank Holiday Week-end.

The weather has been very unsettled this past week with a mixture of wet and windy conditions interspersed with some sunny spells. With the wind changing direction and swirling around a lot, casting a straight line onto the water has been a bit of a challenge to say the least.

The water clarity is still very good and once again most of the fish caught have been in the top four or five feet of the water. Even our regular rudder anglers have resorted to fishing lures on an intermediate line and left the depths well alone.

The best method this week by far has been a floating line with either dries, a team of nymphs, or even floating fry patterns.

Whilst the boats have been doing very well, the bank fishing has definitely improved this week, with a good number of browns being caught.  

Paul Beasley, Tony Broadway and Alec Twaites all reported returning browns of up to 5lbs caught from the tower bank and the cornfield.

Graham Homer, Peter Elliott and Mr T Cocks all caught good numbers of fish on dries from a drifting boat, in biggin bay, over middle shoal and over the aerators.

The gold star of the week however must go to Mick “the brownie” Cronin and Stan Hillman. They went bank fishing on Saturday and caught a large number of fish between them, most of them browns, all on floating fry patterns. Mick was catching nothing but browns from the tower bank and decided to go to rainbow corner to catch, yes, you guessed it, a rainbow. And what did he get, yet another brownie. Well done lads.

Draycote Water weekly fishing report: week ending Sunday 10^th August 2014

 The hot, bright conditions so frequent in July & August have traditionally made this period one of the hardest of the season everywhere. Nevertheless, the fishery has continued to perform with a combined bank & boat rod average for the week recorded as 3.4. This was down from its peak at the beginning of the week – an impressive 6 on the Monday.

It has actually been a week of extremes with many anglers reporting excellent results whilst others have struggled. The bank fishing can be especially hard in August.  However, some notable catches from the shore this week include six rainbows to the nymph team fished by Ivor Bullock in Dunn’s Bay together with three good rainbows taken on beetle patterns by visitor from the Isle of Man, Graham Norman. Interestingly, he caught his fish in Toft during a mid-day period almost under his rod tip. Alastair Gavin is to be congratulated. He spotted, stalked & eventually caught a beautifully marked 5lbs brown which took a foam bodied daddy pattern along the Tower Bank.

Whilst there are still many fish roaming open water, many have also remained in the vicinity of the aerators. Yet again, Ed Douglas, with his cormorant & cruncher combination, managed a catch well into double figures. Similarly, Peter Elliott’s rod was seen to be in an almost continuous fighting arc when he fished small nymphs through the bubbles during his mid-week visit. His best fish was a rainbow of 5lbs 9oz. Dries have also continued to be a major feature of the week. Tom Morris caught 15 on dries during an evening session as did Kevin Rees – continuing his almost unbroken run of hard earned success with a method he has been striving to perfect! Regular angler Jude Tuffs also found herself amongst the action but chose a combination of dries & small buzzers for her 13 fish total.

At the weekend we welcomed John Horsey who ran two heats of the Lexus European Fly-fishing Championship on the water. Attention was sharply focussed on ever changing weather forecasts as the approaching aftermath of Hurricane Bertha was being tracked crossing the Atlantic.  Fortunately we were able to stage the event, which was fished to International Rules a four fish bag followed by catch & release. Twenty eight anglers competed on Saturday in very bright, windy conditions catching a total of 90 fish for a rod average of 3.21. Top rod, & our congratulations go to, Draycote member Tony Parker whose 9 fish total (21lbs 7oz) were all taken on dries. His winning catch was a clear 5lbs ahead of second & third competitors Richard Slater & Ben Dobson both of whom are ex-champions of this event.

It was a different kettle of fish on Sunday – the floating line heat – which started in torrential rain prior to the aftermath of Bertha. This led to an extremely windy & gusty afternoon. Thirty four competed and, despite the extreme weather, caught a total of 87 fish. Ben Dobson excelled once more taking first place with a 15lbs 6oz bag that included a 4lbs 11oz brown. He was followed by Bart Farmer & Derek Moore in second & third spots respectively. Euros Jones caught the best fish at 5lbs. Congratulation to all, with final mention for another Draycote member – Pete Walsh- who finished in ninth place to qualify through to the final.

As expected, signs of fry feeding fish have been constantly in evidence with activity in margins, over the tops of weed growth & also in open water. Sedge are still coming off in the evenings & a good hatch of olive buzzer occurred at the end of the week & into the week-end. Water temperatures are now dropping following the recent weather events so prospects for the coming weeks are looking good.

Draycote Water weekly fishing report week ending Sunday 3^rd August   2014

It’s good to see that the warm, muggy conditions haven’t dampened the enthusiasm of the fish here at Draycote, with the numbers of trout being caught sometimes matching those from the opening week of the season. On brighter days there has been a slight algal bloom, but this has not made an impact on the fishing so far. The water clarity is still very good. The fish are still feeding on pin fry, and with large shoals of perch and roach fry swimming around, this trend looks set to continue. Despite the bright conditions the fish have once again stayed up in the water, the vast majority of them being caught on, or very close to the surface. With the fish preferring the more open, cooler water, the boats have fared slightly better than the bank. Various methods have worked well this past week. Those anglers who have chosen to fish dries have definitely had the best of the sport.

Mr N Evans and Mr T Ward, visiting us on a 3 day package, boated a good number of fish, including a 7lb+ rainbow, all on dries. Draycote member Kevin Rees is in excellent form again this week having caught 12 fish on Monday, again, all on dries.

It was good to see Former manager Craig Barr back on the water. Craig fished all day on Friday, again boating a large number of fish on various methods.

Some good browns were caught and released this week. George Denny took a brown of just under 5lb on a dry fly down in Toft. Mr J Scott caught 12 fish on Monday, including a brown of 3lb 3 oz.  

Best flies. –  Suspender buzzers, bobs bits, hoppers and daddies. – Crunchers, snatchers, dawl bachs, hares ears, buzzers and ptns’. – Damsels and small white lures such as cats whiskers.

Draycote Water mid-week update 31st July 2014

Notwithstanding continuing hot & bright conditions, anglers have enjoyed some excellent sport during the first three days of this week. Monday to Wednesday saw 54 anglers catch a total of 297 trout for an impressive overall rod average of 5.5

Whilst Mick Cronin caught 6 nice fish from the bank, most of the action has still taken place from the boats with fish remaining very high in the water column. Ed Douglas excelled with double figure catches on both Monday & Wednesday using small crunchers & cormorants washing line style in the aerators. Meanwhile, concentrating their efforts on the Inlet & Rainbow Corner yesterday using dries, Paul Ward & Nigel Evans managed a joint tally of 27on their  first day of a three day holiday package. Their best rainbow was estimated to be in the 7lbs region.

Despite a limited green algal bloom at the beginning of the week (which was blown into the harbour & Farborough Dam area), water quality & clarity remains good. Much evidence of early fry feeding continues. Cooler conditions with some rain are forecast for the rest of the week & it is anticipated that this will improve things even more.

Considering the current weather the fishing at Draycote has been surprisingly good this week. Despite the bright conditions quite a lot of fish still seem to be holding in the top few feet of the water. This has in turn produced some good sport, mainly on floating or intermediate lines with dries , nymphs and small lures. A minor algae bloom has surfaced on occasion, but by the early afternoon this has blown into one corner of the reservoir leaving excellent water clarity everywhere else.

The fish still seem to be very keen to take dries particularly in the evening, with some good browns’ being caught. The best of which from the bank was a 5 pounder caught by Mr Alastair Gavin. Mr D Jones also had an excellent day on the bank using size 14 Dawl Bachs, fished on a floating line with a F A B blob on the point. Draycote member Mr Tony Parker used dry flies to great effect over two days, catching a large number of fish.

Visiting anglers  Andy Birkett and Brent Vinall extended their 3 day package to produce a personal rod average of 10.6, catching quite a lot of their fish on hares ears.

Welsh anglers Huw Thomas and Arwen Owen reported catching a number of good quality fish on dries in front of the outlet, despite bright sunshine and a slight algae bloom.

Lures are also working very well when fished on an intermediate or sinking line, especially over the aerators. This area has produced cracking sport for some of this weeks anglers.

Draycote Water weekly report week ending Sunday 20th July 2014

Although at times challenging, in a week that has included some of the hottest temperatures of the year, the fishing at Draycote has remained generally very good –mostly with top of the water sport. We saw 252 rods for the week catching a total of 1063 trout to record a weekly rod average of 4.21

Although sport has still been enjoyed from the banks, particularly early & late in the day, the best action, as expected at this time of the year, has clearly been experienced in the boats.

Monday started very warm & bright but with big westerly winds & breaking waves across the whole reservoir. Richard Pearson (Fishery Manager at Foremark) and I ran a one day “introduction to fly fishing” course for ten pupils from the Avon Valley School in Rugby. After a morning of theory, followed by casting practise, we took to the water in five boats. We soon realised that the fish were holding high in the waves and were keen to latch onto small fry patterns. All the lads experienced hook ups – mostly over open water above, in & downwind of the aerators. Some great fish were caught & all the guys were able to take home a trophy trout for supper. Hopefully, some future new recruits into the sport. Thanks go to Brian Froggatt of Draycote Water Fly Fishers for his valued assistance on the day together with staff Kieron & Alan from the school. Neil Bridges joined in the action that day but deployed his rudder in the big wind to take ten good rainbows on tube flies, also very high up in the water column.

In total contrast Tuesday was hot, bright & almost flat. Nevertheless, for the most part it was to be a day for the dries. Season rod Kevin Rees left his usual bankside haunts once more & went afloat to take 16 on dries in what he described as a “Hot but great day”. Meanwhile Dave Heseltine’s boat took a joint tally of 20 to a mix of damsels & buzzers in Biggin Bay. Another boat of regulars had an amazing day with a total of 41 to the net up to 5lbs. All were on dries from various spots across the Draycote Water dam area & then down towards Dunns & Biggin.

The rod average peaked on Wednesday at a most respectable 5.4 Jude Tuffs returned to form netting 15 to her boat whilst Richard Pelly continued his run of evening successes with five good fish on his delightful light outfit in conjunction with a Big Red dry fly.

Geoff Preston has also proved to be very consistent in the returns this season. His damsel pattern helped him with an 18 fish catch off the Tower Bank on Thursday. Season ticket holder Ray Cramp also took to the boat to catch ten on black lures on a day when the rod average remained high at 4.9

Friday brought with it extremely hot conditions which, as expected, made things challenging to say the least. Despite a rod average drop to 2.2 however, Gordon Slack persisted on the bank and to his credit caught 5 on buzzer tactics. His catch included a 3lbs 8oz rainbow & a brownie of the same size caught & released. Browns have featured well this week .Our own “John The Boatman”  has also had some good fish this week including an estimated 6lbs brown caught & released at the bottom of the Hensborough Bank on a snake pattern.

Saturday saw the development of severe thunder storms with torrential rain & lightning. Anglers were correct to promptly cease fishing at these potentially dangerous times. In between the storms the trout were pulling – no doubt brought back on by a cooling of the water temperature. Contrasting tactics were working. Jim Dempsey & Ifor Jones took 26 to tube flies on the rudder whereas Phil & John Hooper stuck to a combination of nymph & dry fly tactics for a joint tally of 18. Both caught & released browns of 4lbs+

Although very hot & bright again, and  whilst challenging for many,  Sunday saw 60 rods take a total of 283 fish for a rod average of 4.71. We hosted the Midland Counties Cup match fought between Colwick Fly Fishers, Leicester FF, Foremark & Kirby F F – all fielding teams of eight. At the end of the day it was Kirby who took top honours with a total of 32 fish for 74lbs 13oz. Individual honours went to Luke Parker of Kirby F F with an 8 fish limit for 20lbs 12oz. Duncan Millar came in second for Leicester F F. His 7 fish bag for 18lbs 2oz included the best fish of the event – a rainbow of 4lbs 4oz.

Throughout the week the common denominator has been fish in the top three feet or less, together with successes to both dries (particularly the foam bodied daddy patterns) and small fry patterns. To demonstrate the point, regulars Tom Morris & Andy George finished their week on a high with a joint evening catch to foam bodied daddies of 26 rainbows. Tom catches a lot generally at Draycote but described it as his “best fishing session for months”.

For late July current water quality is generally good with reasonable water temperatures. There is a bit of an algal bloom which has developed over the last few days. However  this has been pushed across into the Farborough Bank &  harbour area. I have just taken a full tour of the fishery in the safety boat and am pleased to say that the water clarity up through Toft, Cornfield, Lin Croft, Biggin & Tower Bank is excellent. It is also clear down through the Draycote Water Dam to the Inlet as well as out across the Aerators.

Fishing update for Draycote water – 17 July 2014.

With the weather being mostly overcast but warm for the last couple of days the fishing has been very good. Two Draycote regulars fishing on Tuesday caught 41 fish from a drifting boat, with rainbows up to 5lb, all on dries such as bob’s bits and shipmans buzzer.

A few good browns have also been caught up to 6lb, yet again on dries.

Lures fished within a couple of feet of the surface are also working very well, in particular, cats whiskers and damsels.

The water clarity is still reasonably good with only a slight algae bloom at one end of the reservoir.

Despite being in the height of summer with long warm days and temperatures soaring, Draycote has fished well under a wide variety of methods.The excellent water clarity has enabled the anglers to see the vast shoals of fry, which bodes well for some good sport at the back end of the season.

A party visiting from Ireland , which included Mr Lynch and Mr McCarthy, on our ever popular our 3 day package, where catching on dries down to size 20.

Draycote Regular Mr Pelly has continued his good run of form also on dries, making good use of our last 4 hour ticket, while Draycote Member Kevin Rees has yet again been very successful fishing dries from a drifting boat.

Nigel Keeber and Lee Henfry fished both Saturday and Sunday on the rudder using large tubes on a Di 7  They reported good sport on both days with fish up to 5lb..

Nymphs such as olive hares ears worked well for Mr Steve Conway on Monday, who reported seeing large numbers of fish feeding on pin fry.

Overall the picture looks very good, with fish being caught on a variety of flies on all 4 corners of the reservoir.

Best Boat areas have been the Inlet, Biggin Bay, Lincroft and the bottom of Toft.

Best bank areas have been Rainbow corner, Biggin bay and Lincroft point.

In order to maintain the accuracy of our records could all anglers please ensure that they fill in the catch return sheet before departure.  If not in the lodge it will be found on the counter in the gutting room next door.

Bank Anglers car passes should be, where possible, booked prior to coming fishing as we only have a limited number available.

Boat anglers are also politely reminded of the ruling that there is no anchoring within 100 yards of any pontoon or aerators. This is especially relevant to the harbour pontoon as its own mooring chains & anchors extend out a considerable distance from the end of the harbour & are easily fouled.
