With most of this week seeing an improvement in the weather for anglers, cloud & wind helping to cool the surface water temperature sport has picked up with this weeks rod average to date 4.0
Anglers on the rudder continue to take fish on snakes & sparklers although the best catches have fallen to Buzzers, Hares Ear & Damsel with dries, daddies & big red taking fish in the evening.

A bit of a mixed week, same as the weather with the return sheet showing fish been caught on tubes fished from a rudder deep to dries fished from the bank & nearly everything in between.
On Monday Chris Reves & Ian Mckenzie boated 14 fish mainly on the dries along the north shore, Mat Hanlon fished the bank on Monday evening and caught 12 on dries, R Pelly took advantage of the last four hour permit & boat this week catching his fish on a daddy & great red dry fly from around Lin Croft. Dries & especially the daddy have taken a number of fish in the evening.
Tony Broadway fished with dries from the bank to take his 7 trout
Roy Hubbard & Dave Roper fished the rudder between C & D buoy catching 17 trout on snakes & minkies, Mr Severn fished the rudder taking 8 fish for a total weight 25lb14oz, with Lee Henfrey continuing his run of success on the rudder catching his limit of 8 fish.
During the early part of the week the boils, rainbow corner, inlet fished during the day with Lin Croft the place to be in the evening. Towards the end of the week Toft shallows started to produce again with Kevin Richardson recording a catch of14 trout.
Water clarity is still excellent with a tremendous amount of fry especially around the pontoon, inlet &tower. .

The cooler evenings & showery conditions of last week has cooled the surface water temperature with any algae dropping out, with the water clarity this week described as excellent.
Despite there been a huge amount of pin fry this year a good number of trout this week were taken on dries with Sean Hanlon catching 10 trout on a daddy drifting over open water & on Friday evening Mr Pelly taking 6 to dries, daddies & Big Red from Lincroft.
Buzzer & damsels continue to take fish but with the amount of pin fry a silver Invicta, silver thorax pheasant tail or a flash back has also worked.
Anglers fishing the rudder found catches a little slower this week however Lee Henfrey & N Keeber continue to find the rudder working well for them fishing the morning session 8.30am – 3.00pm catching 19 trout.
Paul Beasley caught a 5lb1oz brown, Vince Veronica caught 5 trout for 15lb, J Pearson & J Astley bank fished the evening session recording 14 trout with both anglers recording fish of 4lb. Members Colin England & Tony Plummer recorded 20 fish for their visit. R Hubbard recorded a brown 4lb8oz with R Elkin returning a 4lb+ brown.
Bank anglers have generally found the best of their sport in rainbow corner & Lincroft with boat anglers finding the best sport off Lincroft, Biggin & in front of the outflow although anglers drifting the open water with dries are picking up some cracking fish.

Another extremely busy week at Draycote Water with both angler numbers & boat bookings reaching record levels. This past week has probably best been described as “Competition Week”.
We were pleased to welcome back for their third year here, the HMRC who assembled from all over England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. Many competitors made a week of the event and practise fished on three day packages before their match on Thursday. We also welcomed back the Association of Major Fly-fishing Clubs with six teams of six competing in Round 3 of their league on the Wednesday. At the weekend it was time for the Draycote Pairs on Saturday culminating in the Draycote Heat of the Scierra Pairs on Sunday.
On Monday Mike Hill & Roy Palmer were pleased to have driven up from London for what they later described as a “wonderful day”. They caught 20 + 12 rainbows respectively using Diawl Bachs & Red Buzzers fished “washing Line” style in Toft Shallows.
Ron Blackwell spent his usual morning with us on Tuesday & his 6 fish boat catch included a brownie of 4-11 & a rainbow of 4-10. Season ticket regulars John Dews & Tony Broadway continued to excel on the bank with a combined total of 27, mostly caught & released. They noted, as did others, how the trout were beginning to show a distinct interest in the large quantities of pin fry that are now to be found all around the fishery. Damsel & sedge together with daddies are also much in evidence.
Wednesday saw the first of the week’s matches – the AMFC. Chris Reeves was to later comment that “match day saw a huge bloom of daphnia and while the dries and nymphs took the odd fish, a two tone blob cleaned up. Only 5 out of 36 anglers didn’t finish early & again, there were many good grown on fish caught”. Bewl Bridge FC ‘A’ won the event with 115lbs actual weight. They were followed by Invicta FFC ‘A’ in second and Tunbridge Wells FFS in third spot. Individual winner Steve Collins from Bewl also caught the largest fish at 4-15. A total of 278 fish were caught in the event giving them a very creditable rod average of 7.72
On Thursday the HMRC/RCSL event concluded with the capture of 126 rainbows & 2 brown trout. Derek Knight’s eight fish 19-12 bag took top honours whilst Mick Toal, over from Northern Ireland, weighed in the best rainbow at 4-4.
Numerous anglers had success during the week on dries & the daddies, particularly the foam body patterns, have been featuring in many of the returns. Gary Turner enjoyed good sport from an afternoon boat on Thursday with an 8 fish total on a mix of Diawl Bachs & daddies. Our own Alan & John also used them to good effect when the sneaked a morning session afloat drifting over open water off the Hensborough Bank. The mystery fly of the week came to us from Mr C O’Mahony who boated 6 fish on Friday using a “Crested Yellow Flanger” (…..which I’m afraid we do not have in stock!).
Mr Severn takes credit for the best bag of fish this week. On Saturday he weighed in an 8 fish limit for 29-12. All his fish came to large lures fished extremely deep, over open water. His bag included a beautiful brownie of 7-12 (see photo on our Facebook page). Buzzers & nymphs nevertheless featured highly in the Saturday returns. Mr Sawyer also reported getting take after take to his small Cat’s Whisker fished on an intermediate from the bank in Rainbow Corner. He netted a total of 13 rainbows during his session.
The Higham Ferrers & District FF “Draycote Pairs” also took place on Saturday with 16 anglers taking a total of 88 fish. Honours went to the pairing of Stephen Ayres & John Water with a 16 fish bag totalling 39-2.
One of the finest catches of the week came to Lee Henfrey who fished solo from a boat on Sunday morning using deep tactics with lures. His eight fish rainbow limit looked like peas in a pod. All bright, full finned silver bars with a total weight of 25lbs 12oz.
Neil Berry’s day was also made on Sunday afternoon when, trying out a new pair of waders off the Cornfield, a grown on rainbow of 8lbs took his Diawl Bach. The perfect specimen was a personal best for Neil and the largest rainbow of the week. Congratulations Neil!
Finally, the Scierra Pairs on Sunday saw 18 anglers in 9 boats battling it out in extremely hot, bright conditions. Kieron Thomas + Craig Gimblet took a 16 fish pair limit for 36-12 together with a time bonus to win the event. A total of 91 fish were caught for a rod average of 5. Phil Burgess took the largest fish at 4lbs. Many caught using Midge Tip lines with extremely long leaders fishing buzzers deep in the bright conditions.
Once more it was a week during which weather conditions affected the fishing. At times the fishing has been very challenging indeed. It has been interesting to observe the reactions of the trout to changing weather systems & those anglers who are thinking, reacting & adapting appropriately to such changes are the ones being rewarded with the best of this week’s results

Generally a harder week than of late but with a 3.4 rod average for the reporting period. Anglers had to contend with very humid, muggy conditions at the start of the week. On Monday what light winds there were swung around 360 degrees twice during the course of the day. Nevertheless, boat angler John Clifford managed to find 6 good rainbows deep off the Draycote Water Dam on a variety of lures. An afternoon/evening boat also took 8 rainbows up to 5lbs 4oz on CDC emergers.
Thornton member Norman Perkins visited on Tuesday and experienced terrific sport in Rainbow Corner on a mix of orange dries & diawl bachs. He took an eight fish limit of rainbows for 29lbs 8oz and his bag included two at 4lbs 8oz. Some of his fish had been covered but quite a few came to him blind. Meanwhile, regular Barry Buxton, in an afternoon boat, managed a 9 fish tally & commented that “Intermediate lines made the day”. It proved to be very hard on the bank during the day, however, Gary Darlow did well to land 7 from Rainbow Corner, the overflow & the bottom of the Hensborough Bank. He fished straight line black and green buzzers & a pheasant tail nymph and his catch included a picture perfect three & a half pound rainbow as well as a three pound brownie, both caught & released.
Improved conditions on Wednesday saw some good sport on boat & bank alike. Kevin Rees continued his good form on the bank taking 16 fish on a mixture of buzzer & sedge pupae. (Considerable numbers of sedge have been appearing in the evenings). Vince Aronica fished in both Biggin Bay & Rainbow Corner with olive & black buzzers. He caught a total of 13 rainbows which had clearly been cruising high in the water column. All his fish came to either the top or middle dropper at depths of three or six feet respectively. Vince described how spectacular his best fish, a fin perfect 5lbs 10oz rainbow, had looked fighting hard in what was gin clear water.
Weather conditions were best described as challenging come Thursday with one angler concluding that it had been a hard days fishing but great for the sun tan! (Remember to pack sunblock in the tackle bag). Despite the extreme heat & brightness, Geoff Preston caught nine rainbows deep on lures in a morning boat session. Eddie Kirk also managed a good eight fish total on crisp packet buzzers.
The effects of a few really hot days didn’t stop Mr Mason who, from the bank in Rainbow Corner on Friday morning, took a five fish bag on Foam Daddies.
The weekend saw a mix of tactics bringing success even though the hot days at the end of the week, combined with a change around of wind into the NE & NNE , upset things for a while. Jim Dempsey still managed to find fish on rudder tactics on Saturday. He recorded an 8 fish limit for 27lbs 4oz which included a brown of 4lbs 4oz. His boat partner Ifor Jones (no, not Thornton Ifor!) had a 5lbs rainbow in his catch. Dave Adams also managed a 12 fish total on black buzzer & diawl bachs.
By Sunday it was clear that the north shore marks were beginning to fish well with fish migrating up the now consistent NNE wind. David Lodge made the most of a Father’s Day fishing gift voucher describing his day on the bank at Lin Croft as “Excellent”. He caught 16 rainbows, all on a goldhead montana tadpole pattern, mostly “on the drop” at the full extent of his cast. Tony Hanks also had a tremendous session in a boat in Toft taking 20 fish on black buzzers fished static. Interestingly, one angler reported taking an eight fish limit on red head diawl bachs suspended three feet under an indicator.
The settled wind direction for the next few days should bring with it consistent sport. It should be noted though that there are two boat competitions taking place this coming week & the boat fleet is virtually booked up until Friday. There is ample bank availability but advance booking of car passes is recommended to guarantee access.

Yet again a week of variable weather conditions which ranged from some bright, hot flat calms to non-stop rain mid-week. Nevertheless, the rod average was 3.7 for the week peaking at 6 yesterday. Whilst the boats are starting to find more consistent results, some excellent sport has been enjoyed on the bank, especially early & late. Generally, sport has still been had on buzzer tactics or nymph patterns such as Diawl Bachs & Crunchers. However, it has also been most noticeable how many anglers have been fishing dries to great effect – especially CDC shuttlecock patterns.
Early in the week Gordon Byers from Lockwood Beck Trout Fishery in North Yorkshire, led a four angler party who spent a couple of days with us. They concentrated their efforts on the dries and enjoyed tremendous sport locating some magnificent grown on fish. Don Coe repeatedly enquired as to what steroids we had them on! John McGarrell took the lead on their first session with a nine fish evening catch of rainbows up to 7lbs – all taken on CDC patterns. They ended their two days afloat having caught and released a total of 53 rainbows.
Dave Thomas enjoyed his reintroduction to Draycote on Tuesday using White Zonkers in Toft where he caught four 3lbs rainbows.
Lough Mask angler & guide Ronan Cusack plus friends flew in from Dublin late on Tuesday morning & headed straight up to Rainbow Corner where the four of them caught 34 rainbows mostly on dries. Their best fish was a 5lbs rainbow that came to a Claret Bits. Season rod Tony Broadway was also on form on the bank and managed a 12 fish total whilst Kevin Rees fished buzzers from the bank at Lin Croft catching 14.
Tosh Storrar’s annual party from both Scotland & Wales was ten strong this year. They described their sport as “fabulous” – catching a total of 132 rainbows with many in the 4-6lbs class. Tosh himself caught & released an estimated 7lbs rainbow. He commented that they all fished dries on the fine weather days but fished deeper with buzzers on what proved to be a very wet Wednesday.
Yet another group making their annual pilgrimage to us were 16 anglers led by Jim Brown who spent 3 1/2 days on the water. Their collective description of the sport experienced was “superb”. They also concentrated on dry fly tactics especially during the last few hours. Their group rod average was a most creditable 7.45!
On Thursday we played host to the CSSC National Game Angling Final. Twenty Four anglers competed catching a total of 86 fish. Steven Frakes took top honours with an 8 fish bag for 21lbs 12oz. Second was Nigel Evans, 8 fish for 21lbs 1oz with Lee Patten in 3rd also weighing an 8 fish total for 20lbs 1oz.
Friday & Saturday saw most of the fleet out, with many practising for the TEFF England Eliminator on Sunday & trying to keep their tactics, flies & results close to their chests.
The event itself was fished by 44 anglers who took 195, caught & released a further 48, recording a rod average of 5.6 per angler. The largest individual fish was a rainbow of 5lbs 10oz. A brown of 4lbs 5oz was also weighed in. Congratulations go to Andrew Taylor whose 12 fish total + 1lbs 4oz time bonus gave him a winner’s weight of 27lbs 14oz. Second place went to Stephen Peart with 10 for 26lbs 11oz. It was another third for Lee Patten, who is clearly on form right now. Lee also managed a 12 fish bag.
Overall, best areas for both boat & bank have been Rainbow Corner, Hensborough, Toft Shallows & Lin Croft. The Tower Bank right down to Dunns has also provided some good sport. Drifting over open water has also been finding a lot of fish for the boat anglers.

Draycote weekly fishing report week ending Sunday

Despite yet another week of varying weather conditions the sport remained consistently good with an overall rod average this week of 5.3
There has been a lot of surface activity with moving fish being seen over most of the fishery. Rainbow Corner & the Hensborough Bank have however, probably seen the most of the action in a week which has seen prolific rises. On Monday black buzzer were everywhere.
Tony Parker & Pete Walsh used both buzzer tactics & dries for a joint catch of 28 in their boat session.
Alternative tactics were deployed by the Watsons on Tuesday who caught over 20 fish in the boils on boobies.
Heavy overnight rain and an extremely wet Wednesday resulted in tremendous sport throughout the day, mainly to static buzzer or slow figure of eight retrieved crunchers. Mr Sicki & partner caught & released 61 describing the experience as “buzzer fishing at its best!”. On the bank, season rod James Hall took 4 rainbows on crunchers for a combined weight of 12lbs.That day, twenty seven rods caught a total of 303 fish representing a tremendous rod average of 11.22
Thursday & Friday saw continuing action to a mix of buzzer tactics, nymphs plus dries & emergers. Smaller sized flies have also been bringing better results. Paul Beasley managed a 10 fish catch which included a 5lbs brown taken on a claret buzzer. Mr Birkett used claret bits, hoppers & hare’s ears from his boat & reported 14 of his 24 fish as being over 21/2lbs.
The three day package breaks continue to be popular & can also demonstrate the consistency of the sport at times. This week the “Brown Party” of six, visiting from Scotland for three days, caught a total of 145. This equates to a daily rod average of 8 per person. Similarly, Enid Edwards, part of a 14 strong group holidaying from North Wales, enjoyed great sport with an 18 fish catch on a mix of dries & buzzers despite much harder conditions in the hotter weather on Saturday. Others in her party went deep with snake lures & humungus boobies & also found taking fish.
Blue skies, bright sunshine, a near flat calm & high temperatures made conditions extremely hard on Sunday. Foremark Fly Fishers held a club event with 20 anglers catching a total of 42 fish. Mark Redfern took top honours with 5 for 13lbs 4oz using washing line tactics whilst Ric Saconne took the best fish at 4lbs 7oz. Sean Hanlon realised that the best of the day’s sport would come in the evening and was rewarded with a 17 fish total. He caught on diawl bachs, pheasant tails & crunchers from the bank at Lin Croft. His best was a cracking rainbow at 4lbs 12oz.

Draycote Water Fishing Report Monday 19th May – Sunday 25th MAY 2014
The weather has been varied this week at Draycote with days that included heavy showers interspersed with bright sunshine. But this doesn’t seem to have affected the voracious appetite of the fish.
Buzzer hatches have been excellent especially along the hensborough bank and into rainbow corner and indeed most of the anglers from both boat and bank have had more success with the smaller patterns. Damsels have also worked well fished on an intermediate line.
Once again a number of large browns have been caught, The best of which was Mr Ron Beavan at 5 lb. Mr John Ryder also caught two browns at approx. 4lbs each.
Plenty of Fish have been caught across the middle of the reservoir and over the boils particularly on small dry fly patterns such as bob’s bits, hoppers and emergers.
The rudder has also been working well once again for boat partners Lee Henfry and Nigel Keeber who took some cracking fish on Sunday.
Best flies have been small buzzers, dawl bachs, crunchers, hares ears and damsels. Dry flies such as bob’s bits, hoppers and emergers have also been effective. We have a full selection of Fulling Mill flies available
Best bank areas have been rainbow corner, the corn field, the tower bank and dunns bay.
Best boat areas have been rainbow corner and the hensborough bank, Biggin bay, Musborough shoal and across the middle of the reservoir.

Draycote Water Fishing Report Monday 12th May – Sunday 18th May 2014
The start of the week saw the demise of the extremely gusty high winds experienced over the weekend leaving conditions almost perfect. Although only twelve rods ventured out on Monday the rod average rose to a massive 12.4 with boat & bank catching similar numbers, almost exclusively on various buzzer patterns!
We now have a full selection of Fulling Mill buzzers, nymphs, emergers, dries & lures available at the lodge
Near perfect conditions continued on Tuesday when regulars John Hoskins & Peter Elliott shared a boat in both Toft Shallows & Rainbow Corner. They enjoyed what John later described as probably their best ever day on Draycote Water netting 42 & 48 respectively, all on buzzer patterns. On his second cast in Rainbow Corner Peter took a rainbow of 10lbs 8oz!
Mike & David Mee also spent two days on the water and found fish to their diawl bachs in Toft, Biggin Bay & the Farborough Bank dam. Between them they caught over 70 fish.
Season rods Tony Broadway & John Dews, who are usually to be found on the banks, decided to take to the water twice during the week & on both days enjoyed tremendous sport fishing white lures deep over open water. Tony weighed in five grown on rainbows with a combined weight of 22lbs. His bag included a beautiful 6 pounder.
On the competition front, we hosted a Civil Service Regional boat heat on Wednesday with 15 competitors weighing in a total of 69 fish.
The banks were then taken over by Rolls Royce on Friday who fished a team event to a four fish limit. Sixty six anglers took part & good sport was enjoyed. The “Derby Tinheads” – John Eccles, Steve Polkey & Lee Payne were the winning Rolls Royce team with 10 fish for 21lbs 11oz. The “Fish Hawks”- Terry Sharp, Darren Graham & Grabham were the leading guest team with12 fish for 29lbs 11oz. Individual prize winners were David Holt & Dixie Baxter. Thanks go to Greys for their sponsorship of the top prizes.
Top prize for stamina must go to visitors from Scotland – Rab Maxwell & Sam Davies who fished with us all week catching & releasing in excess of twenty fish each every day. Their catches all came to either buzzers or dries mainly in Biggin Bay, Toft Shallows & Rainbow Corner.
Numerous brownies have appeared during the course of the week – one at 5lbs was caught & released by Brian Frogatt on Friday. The boats have generally out fished the banks this week. Nevertheless, seasoned regulars Ray Rouse, Ken Rawlings, Kevin Rees & David Hoppe recorded buzzer caught totals of 29, 12, 18 & 30 respectively from their bank sessions during the week. Toft, Rainbow Corner, Lin Croft & Cornfield have been the most productive bank locations.
Things became more challenging with the onset of the hot weather at the weekend causing anglers to reach for the sun screen & water bottles. Not unsurprisingly, rod averages dropped as a result. However, Keith Hamson found a way with olive buzzers in a boat off the Hensborough bank on Sunday catching a creditable 22 fish in very difficult bright conditions.
The buzzer has unquestionably been the fly of the week, in a variety of colours with the blacks, olives & reds favourite. Evening rises have on occasion also been very good at which time emerger patterns & dries have become successful for many.
